Amentum, a global leader in advanced engineering, technical, and professional services supporting the U.S. government, allied partners, and critical infrastructure sectors, is seeking a Tug Able Seaman to support a unique U.S. Navy program located on the remote island of Diego Garcia.
Responsibilities or duties
The Tug Able Seaman supports harbor tug operations in accordance with U.S. Navy standards and maritime industry best practices. Responsibilities include assisting in the safe maneuvering, mooring, and unmooring of vessels, handling lines and equipment, and supporting tug operations during towing, pushing, and ship‑handling evolutions.
The Tug Able Seaman performs lookout duties, monitors deck activities, and communicates effectively with the tug crew to ensure safe execution of operations. This role requires maintaining situational awareness, adhering to navigational and operational instructions, and supporting the tug master and mate during harbor movements.
Additional duties include performing routine deck maintenance, cleaning and preserving vessel equipment, conducting safety checks, assisting with fueling operations, and ensuring the tug is maintained in a clean and seaworthy condition. The Able Seaman contributes to emergency response readiness, participates in drills, and supports mission‑critical maritime operations in a remote, team‑oriented environment.
Qualifications or requirements
Minimum Requirements
- 1–3 years of maritime deck experience, preferably in tug, harbor, or vessel operations
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Valid U.S. Coast Guard Able Seaman (AB) endorsement
- Basic understanding of towing operations, line‑handling, and vessel safety procedures
- Must be in possession of a valid Passport and be able to travel internationally.
- Passport should be valid for a minimum of 1 plus years at the time of hiring.
- Ability to successfully pass contract medical requirements and maintain requirements for duration of deployment.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous work experience in an austere OCONUS environment with a multi-national workforce.
- Excellent organizational, time management and customer service skills.
- Valid country driver's license
- Country visa (as required in line with the U.S. Department of State Foreign Clearance Guide).
