Using smart technology and local operational excellence, we install and maintain water systems serving the poorest communities sustainably. We charge a small amount for water and our efficient revenue collection and O&M model guarantees our systems will last forever.

Role:

The Scoping Officer role sits within eWATERservices’ Kenya team. The role involves significant fieldwork and travel to the Nairobi head office.

eWATER is seeking an enthusiastic, proactive individual with a technical water background and experience in the WASH sector. We are looking for a dynamic team member who is comfortable engaging with communities and leading complex negotiations, while also being able to navigate the technical side of our work and adapt to a wide range of tasks across the business.

The Scoping Officer’s primary focus will be identifying and assessing villages for new programmes, supporting land and infrastructure negotiations, and building community relationships. This role also provides opportunities for leading engagement initiatives and contributing to critical operational and business growth areas.

General Responsibilities:

  • Behaving in a professional manner that positively represents eWATER’s company brand
  • Forming client relationships - meeting with clients, local authorities and other stakeholders to build relationships and understand requirements
  • Liaising regularly with global functional leads for support on responsibilities, including sessions presenting and discussing plans, progress and performance
  • Behaving in a manner which promotes a collaborative, professional team atmosphere
  • Working closely with line manager to utilise their support and to accurately report information and performance via regular governance
  • Effective support of any direct reports and other team members with their professional development, including delivering regular feedback
  • Ensuring any direct reports are clear on their goals and are adequately supported in order to achieve them

Key Role-Specific Responsibilities Include (but are not limited to):

  • Supporting assessments (technical, social and political) of potential sites to understand suitability for a project
  • Supporting the mobilisation of future project sites, including land negotiations and infrastructure handover.
  • Forming and maintaining productive, professional relationships with county water officials and village leaders
  • Running community initiatives such as public participations to engage community members, encouraging sign ups and water usage
  • Occasional support with general Operations & Maintenance, for example, water quality testing, hygiene surveys, water treatment
  • Support with the training and management of community health support staff as needed

Minimum Qualifications and Experience:

Required Work Experience:

  • Experience in supporting projects and programmes from inception to completion to deliver operational results
  • Experience in stakeholder engagement, particularly with government officials, local communities, and contractors.
  • Experience working with government and private institutions within Kenya

Desirable work experience:

  • Relevant experience in commercial, operations or technical teams in the water or wider WASH sector.
  • Technical experience in water infrastructure (boreholes, pumps, solar arrays, pipe network etc.)

Skills:

  • Must be fully competent with the Microsoft suite of software, including strong Microsoft Excel skills
  • Must demonstrate patience and the ability to explain data and reports in a clear and concise manner
  • Must demonstrate good data analysis skills
  • Experience on mapping, GIS, or design/modelling software is desirable

Soft Skills:

  • Must be fluent in both English and Swahili (both written and spoken)
  • Must demonstrate high levels of integrity and ethical behaviour
  • Must demonstrate exceptional communication and interpersonal skills
  • Must be able to work independently with limited micro management
  • Must have strong understanding of measures of performance
  • Must have exceptional organisational skills and demonstrate meticulous attention to detail
  • Must demonstrate excellent, management, leadership and presentation skills
  • Must have outstanding analytical and problem-solving abilities

Academic:

  • Must have BSc/BA or MSc/MA in relevant field
