The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is seeking a qualified Remote Sensing and GIS Specialist to support two key projects: Natural Ecosystems Restoration And Integrated Landscape Management Specialist GEF ID 11862 and Establishing New terrestrial protected areas in Djibouti GEF ID 12018. This role will be crucial in leveraging geospatial technologies for environmental conservation and management.

Responsibilities or duties

The specialist will be responsible for:

  • Developing and implementing remote sensing and GIS strategies for project monitoring and evaluation.
  • Acquiring, processing, and analyzing satellite imagery and other geospatial data.
  • Creating thematic maps, spatial databases, and reports to support project activities.
  • Providing technical guidance and training to project staff and stakeholders on GIS and remote sensing tools.
  • Collaborating with national and international partners to integrate geospatial information into landscape management and conservation planning.
  • Contributing to the development of project proposals and reports.

Qualifications or requirements (e.g., education, skills)

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A Master's degree or equivalent in Remote Sensing, GIS, Environmental Science, Geography, or a related field.
  • Proficiency in GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) and remote sensing software (e.g., ERDAS Imagine, ENVI).
  • Experience with satellite image processing, spatial analysis, and cartography.
  • Knowledge of environmental conservation, ecosystem restoration, and protected area management.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Experience needed

A minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience in remote sensing and GIS applications, preferably in the context of environmental projects.

This is a consultancy position based in Nairobi, Kenya. The contract duration will be for a specified period, subject to project needs.
