Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) is a State Corporation established through the Science and Technology (Amendment) Act of 1979, which has since been amended to Science, Technology and Innovation Act 2013. The 1979 Act established KEMRI as a National body responsible for carrying out health research in Kenya.

Responsibilities or duties

Conduct ethnographic, qualitative, and/or policy research aligned with project objectives.

Participate in project meetings, seminars, and workshops at KEMRI and UiO.

Present research findings at national, regional, and international academic and policy forums.

Contribute to project reports, dissemination outputs (policy briefs, blog posts, podcasts), and public engagement activities.

Work closely with the respective PIs and interdisciplinary research team.

For PhD candidate: complete coursework and submit a doctoral thesis within three years.

For Postdoctoral Fellow: publish 2-3 peer-reviewed scientific articles within three years.

Qualifications or requirements (e.g., education, skills)

Master’s degree (equivalent to a Norwegian Master’s degree, minimum grade B or equivalent) in Social Sciences or Humanities (Medical/Social Anthropology, Development Studies, or related disciplines). Mandatory

Eligibility for admission to the PhD Programme at the University of Oslo. Mandatory

Documented experience with qualitative research methodologies. Mandatory

Excellent written and oral proficiency in English and Kiswahili. Mandatory

Proven independent research experience in East Africa. Mandatory

Demonstrated ability to complete writing projects within deadlines. Mandatory

Strong motivation and suitability for doctoral research. Mandatory

Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and preferably NVivo or other qualitative data analysis software. Mandatory

Demonstrated interest in global health governance and international development policy. Mandatory

Evidence of peer-reviewed publication(s) will be an added advantage. Added Advantage

Commitment to contribute to the academic and research standards of the host institutions Added Advantage
