About the job

AMI helps entrepreneurs and managers across Africa grow businesses and create jobs through practical learning and data-driven solutions.

We are hiring a senior-leaning Impact Insights Analyst to sit in the Impact Intelligence team. You will turn analysis-ready data into clear insights, segmentation, dashboards, and recommendations that guide program and client decisions. You’ll partner closely with our Data Warehouse team, which owns ingestion and data modelling; you own the analysis plan, data quality for decision-making, and the insight layer.

  • Data readiness and quality for analysis – Define validation checks, write QA queries, document assumptions, and raise/track fixes with the warehouse team. Maintain lightweight data dictionaries for program, diagnostic and survey datasets.
  • Analytics and segmentation – Lead descriptive, diagnostic and basic inferential analyses. Build rule-based and clustering segmentation (e.g., k-means) suited to MSMEs. Run cohort/retention analysis and simple regressions to test hypotheses.
  • Dashboards and storytelling – Build decision-focused dashboards in Meta base. Produce short memos and partner-ready slides that move from “what” to “so what” to “now what.”
  • Stakeholder enablement – Run office hours and quick trainings for non-technical colleagues. Track adoption of your outputs and iterate based on feedback.
  • Impact and MEL support – Own analysis plans, question banks and insight narratives for impact reporting and learning agendas; contribute insight assets to proposals and client presentations.
  • Data governance in practice – Apply AMI privacy and consent standards. Promote reproducible analysis with versioned notebooks and documented SQL.
  • Boundary of role – This role does not own ETL pipelines, raw schema design or infrastructure; you collaborate with the warehouse team on those.

Requirements

Qualifications & Experience

  • 5 to 7 years applied analytics experience with program, survey or enterprise datasets, ideally across African contexts.
  • Advanced SQL in production settings including joins, window functions, CTEs and quality checks.
  • Proficiency in Python or R for analysis and validation workflows.
  • Strong BI skills in Meta base (preferred), Power BI or Tableau with a portfolio of decision-driving dashboards.
  • Proven track record translating analysis into clear recommendations for non-technical audiences.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication in English; comfortable working independently in a distributed, fast-paced team.

Skills & Attributes

  • Advanced SQL skills (must-have). Demonstrable advanced SQL (window functions/CTEs) and BI dashboarding experience.
  • Strong data visualization skills (Metabase, Tableau, Power BI, or similar).
  • Analytical rigor and statistical thinking — hypothesis testing, basic regression, cohort/retention logic.
  • Segmentation design — sound feature selection, validation and business interpretability.
  • Experience with MSME or learning datasets, MEL frameworks, financial inclusion or market research.
  • Survey tools familiarity — Kobo, SurveyMonkey, Qualtrics.
  • Exposure to dbt and Git for reproducible analytics; familiarity with BigQuery/Postgres/Snowflake.
  • Visualization craft — crisp layouts, good chart choices, and a bias to actionable insights.
  • Documentation and reproducibility — clean SQL, version control habits, clear assumptions.
  • Stakeholder empathy — ability to coach, simplify and influence decisions.
  • High ownership, integrity, and follow-through.
