The Feed Mill Manager is a key operational leader responsible for ensuring the efficient, cost-effective, and quality-focused production of poultry feed to support the company’s breeder and commercial farming operations. The position plays a critical role in achieving production targets, feed quality standards, cost control objectives, and operational excellence throughout the feed manufacturing process.

Position Summary

The Feed Mill Manager is responsible for the overall management, operation, and performance of the feed mill, including production planning, raw material procurement coordination, quality assurance, inventory management, maintenance coordination, workforce supervision, and cost control.

The role requires strong technical expertise in poultry nutrition, feed manufacturing processes, production management, quality control systems, and preventive maintenance. The successful candidate must possess excellent leadership skills and the ability to drive operational efficiency while maintaining strict standards for feed quality, safety, and biosecurity.

The position carries full responsibility for feed production performance, operational discipline, staff management, and continuous improvement initiatives within the feed mill operation.

Key Responsibilities

Feed Production Management

  • Plan, organize, and supervise all feed manufacturing activities.
  • Ensure uninterrupted production of poultry feed to support company operations.
  • Achieve production targets while maintaining product quality and operational efficiency.
  • Monitor production schedules and coordinate manufacturing activities to meet demand forecasts.
  • Ensure compliance with approved feed formulations and production specifications.
  • Optimize mill throughput, productivity, and resource utilization.

Feed Quality Assurance & Nutrition Management

  • Ensure strict compliance with feed quality standards and nutritional specifications.
  • Coordinate closely with nutritionists and production management regarding feed formulation requirements.
  • Monitor feed consistency, pellet quality, particle size, and physical characteristics.
  • Implement quality assurance programs covering raw materials, processing, and finished products.
  • Investigate and resolve feed quality issues affecting flock performance.
  • Ensure accurate dosing of premixes, vitamins, minerals, additives, and medications.

Raw Materials, Inventory & Cost Control

  • Oversee procurement planning and inventory management of all raw materials.
  • Monitor stock levels of maize, soybean meal, concentrates, premixes, additives, and packaging materials.
  • Ensure efficient stock rotation and inventory accuracy.
  • Minimize wastage, shrinkage, and losses throughout the manufacturing process.
  • Participate in supplier evaluations and raw material quality assessments.
  • Monitor feed production costs and implement cost-reduction initiatives without compromising quality.

Preventive Maintenance & Technical Operations

  • Establish and enforce comprehensive preventive maintenance programs for all feed mill equipment.
  • Coordinate maintenance activities for:
    • Hammer mills
    • Pellet mills
    • Mixers
    • Conveyors
    • Elevators
    • Boilers
    • Generators
    • Electrical systems
  • Conduct regular equipment inspections and performance evaluations.
  • Minimize downtime through proactive maintenance planning and execution.
  • Coordinate closely with mechanical and electrical maintenance teams.

Risk Management, Safety & Compliance

  • Conduct regular operational risk assessments and implement mitigation plans.
  • Ensure compliance with occupational health and safety standards.
  • Develop and enforce safety procedures for all feed mill personnel.
  • Ensure proper storage and handling of raw materials and finished products.
  • Maintain compliance with environmental, quality, and regulatory requirements.
  • Lead incident investigations and implement corrective actions.

Staff Leadership & Training

  • Lead, supervise, and develop feed mill supervisors, operators, technicians, and support staff.
  • Establish performance targets and accountability standards.
  • Conduct regular training programs covering:
    • Feed manufacturing procedures
    • Quality control
    • Safety protocols
    • Equipment operation
    • Preventive maintenance
  • Promote a culture of discipline, teamwork, and continuous improvement.

Reporting & Management Information

  • Prepare and submit daily, weekly, and monthly operational reports.
  • Monitor and analyze key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Report on:
    • Production volumes
    • Feed quality metrics
    • Raw material consumption
    • Inventory levels
    • Maintenance performance
    • Operational costs
  • Recommend operational improvements and capital investment requirements.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Animal Science, Poultry Nutrition, Agricultural Engineering, Feed Technology, Industrial Engineering, or a related field. – An advantage.
  • Minimum 7–10 years of experience in commercial feed mill management.
  • Proven experience managing poultry feed production operations.
  • Strong technical knowledge of feed manufacturing systems and poultry nutrition.
  • Experience with feed formulation implementation and quality control programs.
  • Advanced training in poultry nutrition or feed technology.
  • Experience in integrated poultry operations.
  • Previous experience working in Africa or other emerging-market environments.
  • Familiarity with computerized feed mill management systems and ERP software.
  • Experience managing medium-to-large-scale feed manufacturing facilities.
  • Strong operational leadership and people management skills.
  • Expertise in feed manufacturing and quality control.
  • Preventive maintenance and asset management capability.
