Background
The Government of the Republic of Kenya, through the Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation (MoWSI), has secured funding from the International Development Association (IDA) of the World Bank for the Horn of Africa Groundwater for Resilience Project (HoAGW4RP). The Ministry intends to use part of this funding to support an Internship Programme for the 2026/2027 financial year. The Project Development Objective of HoAGW4RP is to improve access to groundwater and promote its sustainable management in the Horn of Africa borderlands. Component 2A of the project focuses on generating groundwater information and strengthening regional and national groundwater institutions. The internship programme is offered under this component as a capacity-building initiative during project implementation.
Target Applicants
The internship programme targets young graduates who hold bachelor’s degree certificates and obtained their qualifications no more than two years before the date of this advertisement. The programme is intended to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and practical work experience by placing graduates in real work environments. It aims to help participants gain relevant skills and prepare for successful careers. The programme is coordinated by the Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation and managed by the Regional Centre on Groundwater Resources (RCGW). Enrolment, remuneration, quarterly monitoring and evaluation will be undertaken in accordance with Part II of the Public Service Internship Act, 2023.
Work Stations
Interns will be deployed to different agencies and counties implementing the HoAGW4RP. These institutions will serve as their work stations, where they will apply their academic knowledge and gain practical experience. Interns may occasionally participate in field assignments, particularly during the implementation of project activities in the five counties targeted under the HoAGW4RP.

The internship programme is open to young graduates in the following fields: Applicants must: Be aged between 25 and 35 years. Have completed and hold a relevant bachelor’s degree from a recognised institution of higher learning. Have graduated no more than two years before the date of this advertisement. Not have benefited from any other internship programme funded by the Government of Kenya. Not have held formal employment in their area of specialisation after graduation.
Duties and Responsibilities of Interns
Successful interns will be expected to: Complete tasks assigned by their supervisors or mentors. Document the skills acquired during the internship programme. Participate in mentorship activities and other programme responsibilities. Comply with quarterly monitoring and evaluation requirements. Be ready for deployment to any relevant office or work station within institutions implementing the HoAGW4RP where an internship vacancy is available. Observe the rules and regulations of the public institution to which they are posted. Make efforts to acquire relevant skills within their area of specialisation. Maintain confidentiality of information and safeguard tools or equipment placed in their possession during the internship. Obtain clearance from the relevant authority before leaving the internship station.
Duration and Stipend
The internship will run for a non-renewable period of 12 months. The second cohort of 65 interns is expected to begin in January 2027, during the third quarter of the 2026/2027 financial year. Interns will receive a monthly stipend in accordance with the prevailing Guidelines on Management of the Public Service Internship Programme of October 2019, the Internship Policy and Guidelines for the Public Service of May 2016, and any other applicable government circulars, policies or directives issued from time to time.
