Job Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled Customs Clearance & Import/Export Officer with strong experience in EAC customs procedures to manage end-to-end customs clearance operations across Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, South Sudan, and other EAC countries. The role requires in-depth knowledge of EAC customs regulations, KRA systems, transit cargo handling, and excellent coordination with multiple stakeholders to ensure compliant and timely cargo movement.
Key Responsibilities
Customs Clearance & Compliance
- Handle customs clearance operations for imports and exports within Kenya and across EAC member states.
- Prepare, review, and submit customs declarations including EX1, EXIT/MOVEMENT C2, and other related documentation.
- Ensure full compliance with EAC Customs Management Act, KRA regulations, and customs policies.
- Coordinate with Customs Authorities, Port Authorities, Border Agencies, and Transporters to facilitate smooth cargo clearance and movement.
Import & Export Operations
- Manage clearance of goods through ports, borders, inland container depots (ICDs), and border posts.
- Monitor and manage transit cargo movements across EAC corridors.
- Track shipment status, proactively address clearance delays, and resolve customs-related issues.
- Liaise with clearing agents, transporters, and internal teams to ensure timely delivery of goods.
Documentation & Reporting
- Prepare, verify, and maintain accurate import/export and customs documentation.
- Handle KRA system entries, approvals, amendments, and follow-ups.
- Maintain proper records for audits, compliance reviews, and internal reporting.
- Compile and submit regular reports on clearance activities, delays, and performance metrics.
Coordination & Internal Support
- Support internal departments with import/export planning, costing, and clearance solutions.
- Assist in evaluating and implementing customs clearance solutions for new projects and trade lanes.
- Coordinate with suppliers and overseas partners on export documentation and compliance requirements.
Key Performance Areas (KPAs)
- Timely and compliant customs clearance
- Accuracy of customs documentation and declarations
- Reduction of clearance delays, penalties, and demurrage
- Compliance with EAC and KRA regulations
Qualifications & Experience
Education
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification (preferred)
Experience
- Minimum 3–5 years’ experience in EAC customs clearance and import/export operations
- Proven experience handling EAC transit cargo and cross-border customs procedures
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong knowledge of EAC customs laws, HS codes, tariffs, KRA systems, and clearance procedures
- Hands-on experience with import and export clearance processes
- Familiarity with customs documentation and electronic clearance systems
- Strong coordination, communication, and problem-solving skills
- Experience with OA / Office Automation systems is an added advantage
