Mount Kenya University is hiring a Debrailler/Braille Transcriber to transcribe learning materials into Braille and print formats and promote inclusive learning. The role is based in Thika and experience using Braille embossers & transcription software is required.

Responsibilities or duties

Reporting to: Dean of Students

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Assist visually impaired students in accessing academic and non-academic materials.
  • Convert printed materials into accessible formats including braille, audio, or digital formats as required.
  • Support students with disabilities during lectures, tutorials, and examinations.
  • Provide reading and transcription services for visually impaired users.
  • Operate assistive technologies and devices used for learning support.
  • Ensure timely preparation and delivery of accessible learning materials.
  • Maintain confidentiality of academic documents and examination materials.
  • Support disability inclusion services within Mount Kenya University.
  • Assist in orientation and support programmes for students with visual impairments.
  • Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the Supervisor.

Qualifications or requirements (e.g., education, skills)

Must have:

  • Bachelors’ Degree in Education with a specialization in Special Needs Education.
  • At least 3 years’ relevant work experience in a recognized institution.
  • Experience using Braille embossers and transcription software
  • Understanding of accessible learning materials for visually impaired learners

OR

  • Diploma in Education with a specialization in Special Needs Education.
  • 5 years’ relevant experience in a recognized institution.
  • Experience using Braille embossers and transcription software
  • Understanding of accessible learning materials for visually impaired learners
