Internship Overview:
The intern will support the Marine and Freshwater Branch in communications, advocacy, event management, and outreach. Responsibilities include content creation, multimedia development, social media analysis, event coordination, and policy research.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Under the supervision of the Strategic Communication and Engagement Expert, the intern will:
1. Communications & Advocacy:
- Draft briefing notes, speeches, press releases, and policy briefs.
- Develop content for web stories, social media, and video scripts.
- Support multimedia communications (digital and traditional media).
- Assist in creative campaign implementation and dissemination.
2. Research & Documentation:
- Conduct policy and program research.
- Support the documentation and dissemination of reports and assessments.
- Analyze social media performance and generate campaign reports.
3. Event Coordination:
- Assist in organizing workshops, conferences, and events.
- Support marine/freshwater-related events at the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-7).
4. Stakeholder Engagement:
- Network with local organizations and volunteers.
- Liaise with service providers and creative partners.
5. Additional Tasks:
- Perform other duties as requested by the Branch.
Qualifications & Skills:
Education:
Applicants must meet one of the following:
- Enrolled in a graduate program (Master’s or higher).
- In the final year of a Bachelor’s degree.
- Recently graduated (within the last year).
Preferred Fields of Study:
- Environmental Science, Marine Biology, Communications, International Relations, Sustainable Development, or related fields.
Required Skills & Competencies:
- Computer literacy (MS Office Suite).
- Excellent English writing skills (fluency required).
- Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
- Interest in ecosystems, biodiversity, climate change, or sustainable development.
- Ability to work in a multicultural environment.
- Commitment to the UN Charter’s ideals.
Languages:
- Fluency in English (required).
- Knowledge of other UN languages (e.g., French) is an asset.
Internship Conditions:
- Unpaid, full-time (35–40 hours/week).
- Duration: 3 months (extendable up to 6 months).
- Based in Nairobi, Kenya.
