The Role in summary
The secondary school runs from Year 9 to Year 13 and has a student population of about 300. This is a vibrant community, whose students, parents and teachers work collaboratively within an atmosphere of mutual respect.
Hillcrest’s sporting prowess is well recognised in the region. The Director will maintain this long-standing reputation. S/He will coordinate and promote a comprehensive, challenging and exciting sports programme in the Secondary School during timetabled lessons and as part of the school’s extra-curricular programme and advise the Senior Leadership Team on the provision across the school key. The Director will be a committed leader with a clear vision, an outstanding teacher, good communicator and passionate about sports.

Duties and Roles:
1. Teaching and Learning
• Plan and prepare courses and lessons and teach, the pupils assigned to her/him according to their educational needs, including the setting and marking of work to be carried out by the pupils in school and elsewhere.
• Assessing, recording and reporting on the development, progress and attainment of pupils.
• Organising and participating in extra-curricular activities.
• Being a form tutor and conducting all associated pastoral and academic tasks.
• Advise and guide PE department members on their lessons and provide coaching as required.
2. Strategy and Development
• Advise Head teacher and Senior Leadership of current practice and developments in the provision and delivery of school sport at national and international level.
• Provide a strategy for the implementation of provision and produce/maintain a school development plan for sport. This should be done in consultation with the department.
• Ensure that an appropriate and logical progression exists throughout the school and that this is in line with the school development plan.
• Responsible for advising the Senior Leadership on relevant updates in publications, including the school prospectus, website, curriculum, information booklets etc as and when necessary to reflect this strategy and the development plan.
• Complete an annual development plan for Senior School Academic & Curriculum PE as instructed by the SLT and be responsible for reviewing/implementing its content as the year progresses.
• Advise the SLT on staffing and provision of sport
3. The Promotion of School Sport
• Overall responsibility for the image of the department and the positive promotion of sport throughout the whole school and the wider school community to include:
• Oversight for the publicity of the achievements of the department via the local media, school website, newsletter and magazine.
• Ensure regularly updated and engaging departmental notice boards and picture galleries.
• Celebrate success through publications, assemblies and awards throughout the year and especially the annual celebration of achievement in June each year.
• Promote PE as a subject which pupils should consider at GCSE and A Level.
• Advise on the current curriculum provision for PE including exam boards and modes of study including BTEC and OCR nationals.
4. General Management
• Direct a full programme of curricular PE and sport and extracurricular games offering appropriate challenge and opportunities and communicate effectively with other colleagues, pupils and parents.
• Ensure the smooth day to day running of the PE Department and that high standards of commitment, behaviour and sportsmanship are maintained.
• Responsibility for the management and associated administration of all academic PE provision.
• Oversee effective management of staff in charge of individual sports to ensure a broad and balanced range of teams and fixtures throughout the year.
• Adjudicate over and resolve any departmental problems.
• Oversee staffing for individual games sessions and shared PE groups across the age range, including an input to the Sixth Form programme.
• Oversee the adequate provision of cover for games sessions, PE lessons and practices, ensuring that staff involved are consulted as appropriate and informed of all arrangements.
• In liaison the teacher in charge of co-curricular Activities, coordinate the allocation of and oversee the use of all sports facilities.
• Liaise with the 2nd in Department in scheduling all games training sessions, other practices, fixtures or activities and be responsible for ensuring an appropriate balance of such across the school and calendar for each term.
• Oversight of expectations regarding sports kit to ensure that it is worn correctly and in line with Departmental policy.
5. General Administration
• Chair regular departmental meetings, prepare the agenda, and ensure follow through of actions arising from the meeting.
• Manage budgets for PE and all sports, liaising with the Finance Manager, as necessary.
• Liaise with the Estates Manager and Finance Manager regarding the maintenance of sporting facilities.
• Maintain record of all sports staff and ensure that they are suitably trained, well supported and guided in obtaining appropriate qualifications as necessary.
• Ensure that all assessments undertaken by the department are completed according to departmentally agreed grading systems and that appropriate records are kept and maintained.
• Ensure that departmentally agreed units of work are divided and delivered logically within the allocated lessons by year group and term as required.
• Oversee the allocation of staff responsible for writing the academic games and PE reports and ensure that the reports are completed to a high standard within the published deadlines.
• Collate and to finalise lists of students nominated for school awards in advance of published deadlines.
6. Health, Safety and Security
• Overall responsibility for the health and safety of the pupils, staff, activities and equipment in the Department.
• Ensure that all Health and Safety records are updated and well maintained. This includes all policy documents, generic risk assessments for sporting activities and trips, first aid documentation and accident reports.
• Attend the Health and Safety Committee Meetings.
• Oversee First Aid cover for sporting events in liaison with the school nurse and the Health and safety coordinator, and that medical equipment used for sporting activities is available to be checked and restocked regularly.
• Liaise with the Estates Manager over the security of all departmental equipment and areas, including effective storage of pupils’ personal belongings during departmentally organised activity.

Qualifications
• Degree or equivalent in Sports
• Qualified teacher status.
• Recent and relevant professional development.
• Post graduate qualifications

Experience
• Teaching that is good or better which impacts positively on student progress at both IGCSE and A level standard .
• A broad knowledge of PE curriculum areas at different Key Stages including a sound understanding of assessment and monitoring.
• Experience of the use of data tracking and target setting to raise attainment and identify under performance.
• An understanding and appreciation of the value of interesting and stimulating display and other motivational materials.
• To be able to use ICT effectively.

Knowledge and skills
• A commitment to and knowledge of effective strategies to maintain and raise attainment, in particular to address the differing needs which exist in the mixed ability classroom, which includes second language learners.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing with a range of audiences.
• Proven administrative and organisational skills

Remuneration and Benefits

In addition to working with exceptional colleagues and students, the successful candidate will receive a 2-year renewable contract and a salary within the hillcrest pay scale. This role also attracts a responsibility allowance. Other benefits include:
