JOB DETAILS:

The incumbent will perform the following functions:
Provides Kiswahili language website services such as:
• Updates content on UNEP Kiswahili website and all UNEP campaign sites;
• Ensures relevant content is translated from English to Kiswahili and posted in a timely manner;
• Proofreads all content posted on the Kiswahili language website.
• Coordinates review of existing Kiswahili -language sections of UNEP website to determine need for revisions.

Provides Kiswahili language social media services such as:
• Develops social media strategy and execution plans for Kiswahili-speaking audiences;
• Coordinates creation of Kiswahili-language digital boards for campaigns;
• Translates content from English to Kiswahili for posting on social media channels;
• Maintains UNEP Kiswahili language social media channels;
• Posts relevant and timely content on social media channels;
• Engages with Kiswahili -speaking audience on social media channels;
• Translates different types of content such as press releases, infographics, select publication, stories, campaign related content, etc from English to Kiswahili and makes these available on various channels;
• Promotes UNEP's work and messages to Kiswahili-language stakeholders via support to communications and outreach activities;
• Reviews statistics and analytics and adjusts/adapts content strategy to maximize reach;
• Participates in other Communication Division activities (training, meetings, workshops);

Qualifications/special skills
• Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communication, linguistic studies, translation or related field is required.
• A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in translating English/ Kiswahili.

Languages
• English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position fluency in English and Kiswahili is required.

KNOWLEDGE, COMPETENCIES, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
• Years of Experience: At least five years in a senior fundraising, marketing or communications role with evidence of having brought in multi-year donor partnerships, particularly in the humanitarian field
• Income Generation: Proven experience and a successful track record securing grants from trusts, foundations, key institutional funders, legacies among others.
• Strategies: Experience in designing, developing and delivering organization-wide fundraising strategies and tactical plans with a proven track record of managing fundraising targets and having reached or exceeded them
• Leadership & Capacity Building: Proven experience of building colleagues’ capacity on fundraising to respond to donor with tangible outcomes.
• Coordination: Demonstrated ability to work remotely, effectively and efficiently with teams in different countries.
• Marketing: A track record of leading, developing and delivering successful marketing and communication strategies for an organization, which grew organisation profile, reach and engagement
• IT: A good understanding and experience of working with databases, Microsoft Office, PowerPoint, websites and Knowledge /use of funder portals and software.
• Relationship Building: Proven experience of networking and building working partnerships with donors, NGOs and other stakeholders and representing your organization on external platforms.
• Proposal and Report Writing: Experience of producing high quality proposals and reports, delivering quantitative and qualitative information in both formal and informal styles. Understanding of Log frames and M&E frameworks.
• Budgeting: Experience of producing budgets and reports for funders; experience of negotiating budgets, value for money, etc.
• Monitoring: Experience of establishing systems for monitoring and evaluating communications and fundraising and measuring long term impact
• Education: Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Communications, Journalism, Marketing, business administration or related field required

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

• Identifying and packaging Commission’s events for dissemination to the media and public;
• Manage corporate publications, articles and newsletters;
• Review the Corporate Communication strategy to align with emerging issues and trends;
• Draft speeches for commission functions;
• Manage media relations and press releases including talk shows;
• Initiate public forums for propagation and promotion of commission policies, programs and projects;
• Collect information on Commission programmes, activities, significant events and disseminate the same to media and public;
• Coordinate corporate branding including website management;
• Develop appropriate strategies to address possible negative publicity against the Commission;
• Providing clients and stakeholders with information about the commission’s activities through brochures, flyers and website updates including customer satisfactions surveys;
• Develop and nurture relations with diverse publics.

Job Requirements:
Academic and Professional Qualifications:
For appointment to this position, the applicant must have: -

• A Bachelors Degree in either Communications Studies, Mass Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Media Studies, Corporate Communications, or any equivalent qualification from a university recognized in Kenya;
• A relevant Diploma from a recognised institution will be an added advantage;
• Be a member of a relevant professional body in good standing; and
• Must meet the requirements of Chapter six (6) of the Constitution.

Work Experience:
• Minimum of ten (10) years of relevant work experience
• At least three (3) years at Senior Management level;
• A Masters Degree in either Communications Studies, Mass Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Media Studies, Corporate Communications, or any equivalent qualification from a university recognized in Kenya ( is an added advantage).
