JOB DETAILS: Research Assistant (Data collection and digital reporting)
The objective of the collaboration
CISP is recruiting 12 Research Assistants (RAs), (4 from Samburu East Sub-county, 4 from Kuria East, and 4 from Kuria West Sub-counties) to support data collection to be done in September and October 2022 in the respective counties. CISP will seek gender balance in the selection of the RAs.
The RAs will receive ad-hoc one-week training in Nairobi, take part in inception meetings, the pilot testing of the data collection tools, and conduct the data collection in their respective sub-counties.
The study will apply a quantitative approach including eligible community sampled participants including men and women aged 15 years and older using structured interview questionnaires on ‘kobo collect’ and key informant interviews with selected stakeholders with open-ended questions.
The main tasks of the RAs will include:
• Conducting community quantitative data collection and KIIs with relevant stakeholders and ensuring that all COVID-19 protocols as per CISP Kenya SOPs and MoH Directives are observed.
• Report comprehensive findings through digitized forms.
Payment
• The Research Assistant (RA) will be paid a daily stipend based on completed interviews, which will be paid after completing all the assigned tasks.
Transport and accommodation
• CISP will provide transport for the recruited RAs to the training and meetings and during fieldwork within Migori and Samburu counties. CISP will provide accommodation and MEALS to the RAs when and where needed including during the training in Nairobi.
Eligibility Requirements:
• Atleast a diploma in health, social or development subjects
• Experience in quantitative and qualitative data collection and in research activities involving communities
• Interest and ability to work with different stakeholders (community members, children, civil society, government officials, etc.)
• Available during September and October 2022 (exact timeline to be confirmed)
• Must be from the target sub-counties (Kuria east, Kuria West or Samburu east Sub-counties)
• Proficient user of Microsoft Office package
• Good communication skills in English, Swahili, and the local language of the target sub-counties
• Able to work independently and in a team and respect deadlines
• Ready to travel to Nairobi for one-week training.

JOB DETAILS: Laboratory Manager
Job Purpose:
To manage, oversee and co-ordinate all laboratory operations within the Programme so as to ensure effective support is provided to internal and external research and clinical care teams. To ensure the continued and consistent delivery of quality, health, and safety standards in line with GCLP accredited QMS so as to ensure that the laboratory’s accreditation and international recognition is maintained.
Key Responsibilities:
• Provide Leadership, Line Management, Technical Support and Supervision of Laboratory Section Heads and Laboratory staff.
• Work closely with the Head of Biosciences, Principal Investigators (PIs) and other senior staff to develop new programs, projects and/or evaluations to implement operation plans, strategies, objectives, and goals of the programme.
• Prepare /draft budgets, review, approve and monitor expenditure/spending, ensure all service are costed, charged appropriately and recovered on time and liaise with Finance on a regular basis to ensure timely provision of management reports.
• Develop, implement, and monitor policies, procedures and performance standards to ensure efficient, effective, quality and compliant operations.
• Design, implement and monitor relevant GCLP procedures and standards in order to deliver quality programs.
• Document all policies procedures and protocols and ensure staff are continually trained in order to maintain set standards.
• Identify performance improvement opportunities and liaise with the Head of Biosciences, other senior laboratory staff and researchers to develop and implement appropriate improvement programs.
• Manage and undertake laboratory technical procedures and activities including running tests, analysis and experiments; record all processes/ procedures, review/ analyse results and present reports/feedback findings as necessary in line with SOPs.
• Evaluate new tests, methodologies, and instrumentation and make appropriate recommendations on review, adjustments and adoption/use.
• Develop, implement, and continually monitor Health and Safety practices throughout the laboratory facilities.
• Evaluate the effectiveness of Laboratory strategic plans and programs.
• Identify, project and plan departmental procurement requirements and ensure the continuous availability of all supplies including equipment, chemicals, stationary and other materials as may be needed.
• Manage, lead and develop staff including, identifying staffing requirements, allocation of roles and responsibilities, monitoring performance and driving staff training and development activities.
• Coordinate the Laboratory Training programme including Continuous Professional Development (CPD), workshops and conferences.
• Draft, write, edit and prepare training documents, technical reports and oral presentations for Laboratory programmes.
• Prepare and submit reports as requested for project achievements and project plans. These includes Project Scopes of Work (SOW), Project Implementation plans, Laboratory Analytical Plans, semi-annual reports and project time-lines.
• Manage meetings with various stakeholders and ensure that the interest of the Laboratory is well presented.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Master’s degree in biomedical sciences or in a relevant field.
• At least 8 years’ experience working in a medical/research laboratory with at least 4 years’ experience managing an accredited laboratory undertaking clinical trials at a senior level.
• Registration by by Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board (KMLTTB)
• Knowledge of GCLPs, QMS and other relevant best practices and standards
• Knowledge and experience of implementing, operating and maintaining Quality Assurance &Quality Control Systems including Internal Quality Control and External Quality Assurance (EQA) Schemes.
• Handling and shipment of dangerous goods (WHO/IATA certification)
• Computer literacy with proficiency in Microsoft applications
DESIRABLE:
• Significant experience of managing an Accredited Clinical Trial, Diagnostic and Research Laboratory.

Reporting to the Head of Plant Health Theme, the incumbent is part of a multidisciplinary team providing leadership, research and development strategy to the Centre in collaboration with icipe’s other scientists. It is expected that the job holder will maintain a portfolio of research aligned with icipe’s vision and strategy.
Specific Duties
The successful candidate will be expected to:
• Lead and spearhead the development of a coherent vision and strategic framework for the Push–Pull Programme in line with icipe’s strategy and goals, and international best practices.
• Organise a Push–Pull Programme structure to cost-effectively utilise resources to meet icipe’s research, capacity and institutional building needs.
• Provide cutting-edge scientific leadership to scientists and technical staff to further develop, adapt, optimise and scale up Push–Pull technology to a broad range of agro-ecosystems and farming systems.
• Guide scientists and technical staff within the Programme to ensure timely preparation of annual work-plans, budgets, and scientific and technical reports for donors.
• Ensure that the Push–Pull Programme members continually update skills and methodologies to keep up with global cutting-edge knowledge that is relevant to the Plant Health Theme’s research.
• Provide leadership and guidance to scientists in the publication of research outputs in highimpact peer-reviewed journals, as well as provide stewardship of intellectual property developed under the programme.
• Promote and establish collaborative linkages within icipe and with national, regional and international institutions in the Programme’s relevant fields of research under the Plant Health Theme.
• Actively seek and secure external support for the activities of the Push–Pull Programme, including resources to develop and grow the research portfolio.
• Manage and develop the staff of the Push–Pull Programme to create and foster a culture of scientific excellence and to ensure that the Programme has the human resources required now and into the future.
• Prudently manage financial, physical and intellectual resources under the Push–Pull Programme.
• Facilitate peer-review of the performance of Push–Pull Programme staff.
• Initiate periodic reviews of the performance of the Push–Pull Programme to ensure relevance and quality.
• Act as a spokesperson and representative of the Programme.
• Ensure that the Programme meets its legal and reporting responsibilities to all stakeholders, includingpartners and donors.
Requirements/Qualifications
• PhD degree in entomology or related agricultural sciences, but preferably with expertise in habitat management, chemical ecology, agronomy or biological control from a reputable university, and postdoctoral training from a highly reputed laboratory.
• Ten (10) years’ experience progressively gained in either a research organisation or a university.
• Excellent publication track record with at least 50 publications.
Core Competencies
• Track record of writing successful proposals for large grants.

• Proven experience of working with farmers, preferably in Africa, and transdisciplinary research and development collaboration in social science research, agricultural economics or related disciplines.
